What's in a Name?

Once again, we find ourselves with a brand new yarn that is hopelessly, helplessly nameless. You named Honor last year, can I ask you to put on your thinking caps for us again?

"Yarn X" is a 55% superwash merino, 15% nylon and 30% Outlast viscose sock yarn. It has a nice tight twist just like Shepherd Sock, but it's three ply instead of four.

Lorna's Laces

You're probably wondering "what is this Outlast she speaks of?" That's a fair question. Outlast is this crazy fiber that interacts with your body's microclimate to moderate temperature from being too hot or too cold. It was used by NASA. Ferrari uses it for their race car seats.

We spent a lot of time deciding whether we wanted to go ahead with this yarn or not. At market in January 2010, we gave out about a dozen skeins to a bunch of different designers. They kept coming back to me and asking me when we were releasing it. I hemmed, I hawed. They poked, they prodded. I said let's do it! We're bringing it to market in June along with nine or ten new colors.

The photo you see is dyed in a really pretty color, but we'll be dyeing it in all of our colors, so don't let the one shown here influence you.

Here are the details. Send your entry to contest AT lornaslaces DOT net with the subject line reading "New Sock Yarn Name". We'll narrow the choices down to our three favorites by April 17th. Then we'll email a ballot with the top three to our newsletter subcribers on April 18 and let you vote for the winner. If you don't get our newsletter, you can sign up here. Voting will close at 5:00PM central time on April 22.

In case of multiple entries for the same name, we'll use a number generator to pick the ultimate winner.

You're probably wondering about the prize, aren't you? How about 12 skeins of the new yarn? My theory is that would be enough for the lucky winner to make a pair of socks every month for a year. (If you aren't a sock knitter, don't despair. We'll come up with something else to make your heart sing.)

Please keep in mind that we're not Publisher's Clearinghouse. Contests and giveaways aren't what we do every day. I'm trying to make things as simple and fair as I can. You could probably find a loophole to exploit, but let's try and play nice and just let this all unfold for what it is...fun, fun, fun!

I don't know if my previous comment came through, but I suggested Balance - balancing on your feet, and balancing your temperature.

When I look at the colorway I think of Swimming Pool Fun!

Here's a few suggestions - climate, temperate, ambience, or element.
The color seems like a perfect Midwestern prairie sky reflected off lake.

I think: sportif (the french for sporty pronounced spor-teef)

It's what I thought of first.

Hmm. How's equilibrium sound?
Keeps your temperature balanced, and it's a pretty cool sounding word.

It looks like Comfort to me. Or Comfort and Joy

maria said...

I like Comfort & Joy. and I think Loretta agrees with me. Comfort is already a name of a popular yarn. So I don't think it could be comfort all by itself.
I looked at the other names of your yarn and Comfort & Joy seems to fit with all the other names of your yarn. (Angel, Shepard, Honor, etc.) Seems there is a biblical/nativity kind of theme going on there. :-) So perhaps Comfort & Joy describe the name and fit the rest of the names you have used so far. :-)

How about Steadfast (Steadfast with Outlast)?

Anonymous said...

I wanted to suggest "Solace" as a term for giving comfort, but that's already taken.

How about giving a nod to the technology involved - Equinox.

How 'bout Equipoise?

miranda Jeffries said...

Love your work and love the new color and what about Blue Horizon, or Blue Haze? What ever it will knit up into some thing really special. Miranda.

Maybe "Blue Space", for the NASA-reference?

Perceive Sock

Because perceive means to see, or to notice, and I would love socks that noticed my feet were getting too warm.

I got mine in my Cookie A Sock club package yesterday. Love the yarn. I can't wait to work with it!

The name I like for this yarn is "Intuition" - Since it knows what your feet need.

I got some from Cookie A yesterday, and love the feel. Can't wait to knit it up.

My last post did not post, so I hope this isn't a repeat -

I suggest the name "Gemini" for its link to NASA's space program with a dual meaning from the astrology sign, Gemini (the Twins) for the fact that the yarn is made from natural and man-made (or woman-made) fibers.

"Tenacity" Long lasting, determined, and impliedly in balance.

Hmm, "Tepid Toes" for the yarn base.

For the color in the blog, how about "Spaced Out"?

How bout Unique?

I agree with the person above that said Tenacity. That's a really good one!

I like Amy's suggestion of "Balance." It's a balance between the pure merino I so love to knit with and the newer yarn technology of Outlast.

Jocelyn H. Chilvers said...

"Sportique" The first thing that came to mind when reading about this new yarn is it's potential use for creating active wear: outerwear, socks, accessories of all kinds! "Sportique" is also fun to say! "Sportique" says sporty AND classy! "Sportique"!

Amanda M. said...

Still going with space/NASA and riffing off the "Gemini" comment...How about the first series of spacecraft that took man into space in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first manned spacecraft...Mercury....Or Apollo...

I think Mercury fits best though because of the temperature thing...and mercury being in thermometers.

Another idea! Stasis is the Greek term for the body's ability to achieve temperature equilibrium without exterior adaptations. At first I didn't like it, but the more I think about it, the better I like it for a yarn that mimics a natural biological wonder.

I don't see my suggestion, so, here it is again.

Faithful

An homage to the workers who stayed behind to try to fix the reactor problems after the tsunami and the dog who would not leave his friend despite his own injuries. Plus sort of a continuation of the sorts of names Lorna chose for the lines she started with.

See you at Sock Summit.

Hi, my idea is to name the whole line not just on color way. I love the idea of "A-Maze-Ing". I have knitted with a combination yarn with the viscose in it and it is truly amazing and warm. You could also call the line of yarn "Hot Socks". cjp

Hi! What an exciting new yarn - technology is amazing!

I would like to call this line Lorna's Laces OASIS ~ whether you use it for socks, a garment or a shawl, you'll always be in a pleasant place.

My second name for this yarn would be Lorna's Laces ADAPT (for obvious reasons).

My third name for this yarn would be Lorna's Laces GOLDILOCKS ~ as in Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold, etc. (and Porridge just doesn't cut it now, does it?).

I am Marjon and my Ravelry name is SnailRacer.

"Celsius" for name of the yarn, Lake Michigan (or your favorite lake) for the colorway. The blues in the yarn remind me of a cooler day on the lake, of course you could name your yarn "Fahrenhiet" and could be in warmer hues. B.Hahn
